My first college professor, David Rubin, was the dean of Syracuse’s communications school; an academic for 25 years at that point, journalist and Pulitzer Prize judge for 25 years before that. One of his clearest suggestions was that journalism, at least in its traditional sense, was already dead. If you wanted a long-lasting...

European CIOs are shunning the benefits of social media for business, reveals a study from Easynet and Ipanema Technologies. CIOs risk alienating customers, creating ineffective marketing strategies, demotivating staff and eliminating their competitive edge by not embracing social media. The research, Killer Apps 2012, showed that: 67% of European CIOs and IT Directors said they block Facebook; 60% block YouTube; 49% block Twitter; and 56% block all online video. "It's a risky business to block social media networks and I'm genuinely shocked at the statistic showing how many companies do this,...

The damage keeps piling up on Facebook. The social giant's stock hit a new low late last week after it reported second-quarter results that disappointed investors. The stock fell nearly 15 percent in morning trading Friday. The stock is now about 39 percent below its IPO price. Facebook issued its first financial report as a public company after the market closed Thursday. Facebook reported stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers, but investors weren't impressed. Although revenue grew 32 percent in the second quarter, growth has slowed from earlier this year and from previous years. That's a concern for a...

The backlash against Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy's comments about same-sex marriage has been quick and unmerciful from gay-rights advocates and others who simply disagree with the company's high-profile voicing of its exclusionary viewpoints. Multiple comments are pouring in every minute on the chain's Facebook page — normally a social media manager's dream come true — but in this case, the majority of those comments are vitriolic, with a few lonely supporters offering up appreciation for the chain's tasty sandwiches. The result: Chick-fil-A has completely lost control...

It's safe to say that social media has taken over many aspects of the public relations field, much to the frustration of PR professionals. With the extreme popularity of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, news often gets out (and many times, gets distorted) before it has the chance to go through proper public relations channels. These sites are making it harder and harder for firms to do their jobs, especially in times of a crisis. When something goes wrong, the news spreads remarkably fast through the regular media, and even faster through social media. One post on Twitter can...

Questionable Rolling Stones puns aside, apropos, social media does seem to have some satisfaction problems. According to the most recent round of survey statistics from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), social media companies’ customer satisfaction ratings in general are down an average of 1.4% from the same time last year.

That...

On the heels of a recent report about Facebook quickly turning over user data to law enforcement officials under subpoena, Twitter's latest attempts to stiff-arm authorities demanding its user info could position the microblogger as the "people's social media site." According to an All Things D report last week, Twitter has decided to appeal a recent ruling in the legal battle between the social network and New York State over the tweet records of an Occupy...

Companies in the Fortune Global 100 were mentioned a total of 10,400,132 times online during a month-long period. The majority of these mentions happened on Twitter, according to the Third Annual Burson-Marsteller Global Social Media Check-Up which includes new data provided by Visible Technologies, a leader in social media monitoring, analytics and services for enterprises globally. The study examined the Fortune Global 100's use of popular social networking platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and, for the first time, Google+ and...

Facebook — already the lowest-scoring e-business company — suffered the largest decline in customer satisfaction according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) E-Business Report released this week in partnership with customer experience analytics firm ForeSee. The social media juggernaut plunged 8% to 61 on a 100-point scale, setting a new record-low score for the "Social Media" category and placing it among the five lowest-scoring companies of more than 230 measured by the ACSI. As Facebook falls, cross-town rival Google+ does...

In today’s media environment, delivering information in a concise manner can be the difference between a featured mention and obscurity. The ultimate example is turning a 500-word press release into a 140 character tweet.

Here are four tips to help you do it successfully:

  1. Don’t just repeat the headline. Though tempting to use, press release headlines don’t always tell the whole story when seen outside the context of the press release.
  2. Post the release...
