What President Obama Can Teach Us About PR, Public Speaking & Media Training

Posted on the Tech Affect blog on September 9th by Sandra Fathi

When we sat down to watch President Obama last night in his speech on the American Jobs Act, my husband and I knew that we had different views on his politics, but we both agree that he is an outstanding orator. President Obama is undoubtedly one of the best speakers that has graced the White House in decades. Regardless of your views on the content of his speech, there is no doubt that he captures the attention of his audience, that he is a dynamic and charismatic speaker and that he knows how to master a media opportunity. Earlier this week, I conducted a media training workshop for one of our clients and as part of the program, we watched videos showcasing some of the best and the worst media performances in recent months. So many of the worst examples were made by politicians who let their egos get the best of them, lost their composure and they failed to take advantage of a great media opportunity.

President Obama Introducing the American Jobs ActAt the conclusion of our media training session, we talk about the “5 Cs” of execution in a media interview or public speaking. Obama mastered the 5 Cs long before last night’s speech but following his lead is an excellent example for any executive in the private or public sector.

The 5 Cs:

  • Conviction – Deliver your message with conviction and enthusiasm. If you are able to demonstrate your passion for a topic, your excitement on an issue, it can sway an audience and the media.
  • Conversation – Keep in mind your audience when developing your content – and have a conversation with them on a subject they care about and in a way that they understand. Straight-forward examples and universal terms are better than highly technical explanations that can confuse and alienate your audience.
  • Composure – Even in a hostile environment (like a room filled with your political opponents or skeptical media) keeping your composure and persevering in your mission is critical. If you lose your cool or go on the defensive, your credibility can be damaged.
  • Confidence – The best way to come to a media opportunity or speaking engagement full of confidence is to prepare extensively and know your content inside and out. Having a strong grasp of the issues, clearly outlining your message and arming yourself with facts, figures and irrefutable data helps any speaker confidently step into the spotlight.
  • Color – People may remember facts and figures – but they identify and bond with stories. Whenever you can provide colorful examples that illustrate your message while engendering an intellectual or emotional tie to the audience, you can leave a lasting imprint.
Although it is hard for anyone to match President Obama’s natural talent in this arena, we can all learn from him and improve. Whether we are giving a speech to the entire United States, a group of employees or just one industry reporter, applying these rules can make any opportunity a powerful moment of change in the course of our lives and our business.

The 6th "C" is Content.

President Obama may have mastered your 5 C's, but his presidency is imploding because eventually, after all the style points have been awarded, we are waiting for substantive Content. In the absence of Content, his Conviction looks like bull-headedness, the Conversation is non-technical, but fails because it is filled with soaring rhetoric that is disconnected from the listener's life. Obama is no master of Composure, as nearly anyone asking him a controversial question learns. His Confidence seems superficial; he has not mastered an idea or vetted a plan, but seems to think we are happy working out details later. Two stimulus failures later...he might want to re-think his approach. As for Color, he provides emotional stories, sometimes dishonest ones, that serve his purpose. The problem is getting caught doing it, which he frequently does. Then it seems manipulative. Even as Orator in Chief, opinion polls show he is coming up wanting.

politics aside...

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your comment. I think you are right regarding Content - it absolutely should be added to that list. Without substance, it's just blowing smoke. Although I may not agree with your political analysis, I do agree that you have to have the 'goods' and not just the delivery.

Best,
Sandra

Obama

The ongoing problem is that he is appealing only to what he believes is the "truth" he uses key phrases and words and expects that because he said them, it's the way it is. Turns out, American's want to see the three R's. RELIABLE, REACTIVE,RESULTS. They grow tired of "HEARING" I can put American's back to work. He has said this numerous times- yet NO RESULTS. Nothing has changed nor will it.
He speaks of putting our Veterans back to work- yet he is pulling them from Afghanistan and leaving 10K there completely without considering the damaging affects this could have on their lives. The remaining soldiers there have families and their lives have value. What happens to those whom are brought home? We shut down bases and they become part of the "increasingly high unemployment" numbers.
Cutting taxes? Really so the deficit will continue to grow marginally and become no better than it is now. How does he expect this to assist anyone?

American's have heard everything he said. Yes eloquently speaking, he has a clear message. Pass this act and I will see that people return to work. The problem is, he can't ensure that people return to work because taxes have been cut, or pay increases. Business doesn't work in a vaccum- it's expansive, evolving, and innovation is taking place. The results of America's government regulation/taxation/influence is what is sending companies to Japan, Africa, and other countries. His continued failure to see the big picture is still unresolved. Never mind the fact, he gets paid no matter what happens as do the politicians isn't helping any here. He isn't taking a pay cut nor is anyone else there he is standing in front of. His failure to consider the publics of whom he was voted into office by is a problem! When does he have to do without? Never, yet millions of American's are having to and children are hungry, needing clothes, basic necessities while he gives these speeches, we need to reach out to our neighbors who are jobless and are unable to do this xyz activity. Really, he has a message but his call to action is missing! Passing this will never work only increase the problem already there.

The bottom line is regardless of the clarity in the message, if it lacks a clear call to action with actual demonstrated results that are guaranteed. it's meaningless. We have to show short, long term and mid course evaluations along the way. All of which are strategic planning focused items PR guru's value and know too well. He failed to do this- it's puffery and fluff and honestly it's getting old.
