The Future of Media is Currently in Production
Posted on the Brian Solis blog on July 27th
Broadcast journalism evolves with every new medium that emerges. Social media certainly opened the doors to new forms of content and distribution channels, but in the end, value, consistency and engagement separates those who find a long-term audience from those flail in obscurity. The market for relevant and compelling content is infinite, regardless of medium.
While traditional media learns to adapt, new visionaries arise to push the boundaries and possibilities of media and design fresh business models to support it. Such is true for my next guest on Revolution. Shira Lazar is not only a good friend, she's also one of the practicing pioneers of new journalism.
Over the years, she's produced and hosted a number of social programs including specials for the GRAMMY's and the Oscars along with creating live news and talk show programs for CBS News. Lazar is now host and producer of WhatsTrending.com, an award winning live show that features notable guests, celebrities and business leaders with guests including Richard Branson, Robert Rodriguez, Forest Whitaker, Snoop Dogg, and Tony Hsieh.
Shira continues to challenge the status quo and it's her tireless pursuit of what’s next that will earn her a place on the various screens of viewers for years to come, "“"You have to bring value to the viewer….bring broadcast quality content, but with the authenticity and interactivity of the social web."
p.s. congratulations to the What’s Trending team on its Primetime Emmy nomination!

Using web video to report news is an excellent approach
We strongly agree with Brian and Shira's observations. In the headlong rush to be cute, or funny, or viral to get attention online, many content producers are missing an obvious opportunity -- telling a story in news report form. It may sound trite, but it really does work to put yourself in the place of a tv news crew reporting on your company, and then broadcasting your news story on your website.
Forget about news releases, turn your PR staff into a news bureau, and create broadcast news stories about your company. Don't worry about media placements or clips, place them on your own site.
It really does work. See our site for examples, including the won we just won an award for producing, about the Burlington County NJ Chamber of Commerce economic development bus tour. We videoed the tour, captured comments from some of the business leads, and created a voice over. It tells the story effectively and in pictures, not just talking heads.
You should really, really be doing this.
